Who is
Ben?

Benjamin F. Fruehauf II was a distinguished Air Force Colonel in the Vietnam War. Ben, also known as "the Col." was stationed at many exotic and beautiful places across the globe. But nothing compared to the charm of the Arkansas Ozarks. In the late 1960's, the Col. and his two sons, went on a 3 day trip from Carver to Gilbert. On the 4th day of the float, they made it to the Gilbert Store. The Col.'s oldest son, Ben III, said he never wanted to see the place again. But on the porch of the Gilbert Store, the Col. told his oldest son, this place is heaven on earth. The Col. put down roots in Gilbert in 1970, before the Buffalo became a National River. They began renting a handful of aluminum canoes out of their cabin and putting up campers in the backyard. In 1988, they purchased the Gilbert General Store. After all those years, the Col.'s efforts became a thriving family business. We commemorate his life and legacy with BEN'S PLACE.
